More Basketball…. and he scores!

More basketball games over the last few days and they still have 2 more games this week with Senior Night on Friday.  Alex and the Varsity team lost both games (Friday and Tuesday), with last night’s game going into Overtime for the loss.  The team is choking down the stretch as they tend to stop shooting when they need to the most, especially the guys that can keep them in the game with 3 point shots.  Losing their 2 best players has definitely hurt their chances of making it to the playoffs at this point. Alex has attempted three shots over the last couple of games but none of them have connected.  Alex however continues to play outstanding defense – they generally put him on the best player even if the opponent has a large size advantage.  The game on Friday night was probably the worst game of officiating that we have ever seen… it was so bad that Dad was actually booing (and one of the refs was Dad’s friend).  Alex and two other players fouled out in that game and then last night 3 players fouled out as well…. there is definitely not a home court advantage with these referees.
Junior Varsity split the last two games as they lost on Friday but handily won on Tuesday.  Sam got quite a bit more playing time last night – several minutes and took advantage of it.  Sam attempted three shots in the game and scored once from the free throw line!!   The bench all stood up and Sam high five’d a teammate while Mom and Dad almost fell out of their seats.  🙂
Another game at GCA tomorrow night, which will probably be a bloodbath since they lost the first encounter and they had their 2 best players on the team still – it’s also that schools Homecoming game.  GCA is in the league above Trinity.  The game on Friday is Senior Night for Trinity and of course is at home.  Mom and Dad have to walk on court to give Alex a present – all Seniors from both the boys and girls will be have a short introduction…. could be a long evening. 🙂

Apparently Alex dribbles and shoots quite a bit in practice, b
ut we don’t get to see this much in the game.  🙂

A quick sports update…

Our last post was in October with our visit to Waynesboro and since then we have had a lot of games, but unfortunately we have also been quite busy and we haven’t had time to post anything on the blog or Facebook, so here is a quick run down…

First off, Alex and Sam went to the State Championship within their division for soccer and unfortunately lost in the Championship game.   The championship game was against Jacksonville and was very physical.  Both Alex and his friend, Zack, went out a couple of times with an injury but returned to the pitch after a few minutes rest.  The field they played on was also very tiny – smallest field we had ever seen and certainly not a benefit to the style of ball they play – they need a lot of room to set up on the wings.  Because of the field size they never had much of a chance set up any plays, as it was just too crowded in the middle.  The other thing that played against them was that the semi-final game went into overtime and finally penalty kicks before it was over, so everyone was quite tired.  The sad part is that they easily defeated Jacksonville early in the season, but on a bigger field.
Sam didn’t see much playing time as both of the games were too close,  but he did see a few minutes in the final game to give one of the other defenders a couple of minutes rest.

Alex scored a couple of goals during the regular season off of goal kicks, but couldn’t get one to  bend in during the finals.

Alex and Sam warming up before the Championship game

The 3 Seniors make the All State Team!
Next up basketball season and it started the Monday after the soccer championship.  Alex, of course made Varsity and Sam plays on Junior Varsity.  Alex has been playing quite a bit this season and even started a couple of games before the holiday break.  The team came in 2nd Place in the Southeastern Tournament which was quite an accomplishment because the school has not made it to the Championship game in a number of years.  Alex made quite an impact in both the semi-final and championship games with his defensive play.  Several parents, the coach and principal all stopped by to tell us how great he played in the semi-final game.  The coach even joked with him that it was the most minutes he had ever played in a Varsity game.  Alex was given the assignment of shutting down the other team’s top player and he actually held him to just a couple of points… the player ended up being named to the all-tournament team as he had two other great games.   Since those games Alex has been playing quite a bit, but is still reluctant to dribble or shoot very often.  Unfortunately for the team, the two star players were kicked off the team over the holiday break and Alex will now need to step up and take some more shots as well as dribble and help run the offense.  The first game since the holiday break was yesterday and they ended up losing by 12 points.  Alex played almost the whole game, but it was obvious they were missing their star players.  The team played well up until the 4th quarter (as close as 1 point a couple of times), but just ran out of gas.
Sam meanwhile has been working on his shooting and dribbling skills and has seen some playing time, but not much yet even though he is the biggest player on the team.  We are going to try to work with Sam over the summer to improve some of his basic skills, but he does seem to enjoy basketball a little more than soccer.  We really think he just likes wearing his bow tie to school on games days.  🙂
Alex’s first start – this is him being introduced during the introductions..

A Day in the Life….

What can you do with a little over 24 hours and a road trip to Waynesboro?  Well we found out a couple of weekends ago when we made the trip up to enjoy some of the fall foliage.  First up, Saturday morning we leave North Carolina at 6am.  Five hours later we arrive and grab a quick lunch at Nana’s and then off to the Art Festival in downtown Waynesboro that afternoon.  To finish the day a huge spaghetti dinner at home with a couple of good movies on Netflix.  Sunday morning all the boys went with Gung Gung and had breakfast at Cracker Barrel.  A little later we made the trip up to Humpback Rock in SNP for a few photos.  Actually a little over 700 photos between the 4 of us.  Sam took the majority of them as he was looking for a photo to enter into the Spring Art show at school.  A quick trip back to the house for sandwiches and pizza, then finally a stop on the mountain for the annual photo of the boys.   Whew…. just thinking about it makes us a little tired.  🙂  Tell us which of Sam’s photos you like best!   (Click on the photos to enlarge them and get a better look)

Even though Sam claims he wasn’t sleeping we think the boys
got at least a couple of hours of sleep on the trip up.

Senior Night…..

Alex and Sam had their last regular season soccer match last Monday.   For Alex it was his last soccer match at Trinity as he will be graduating this year.  Since it was the last game of the season, it was also Senior Night and the coach gave a short speech about each of the 3 seniors after the game was over.  The game ended in a 8-0 victory with Alex getting another goal off of a corner kick (that would be his 3rd corner kick goal of the season) and he had several assists in the game, including one off of a another corner kick that his friend Jeremy headed in for a goal.  Sam looked a little rusty out on the pitch as the 2 weeks off due to the rain didn’t do him a lot of good.
